For effective meditation we need to be able to silence and purify the mind. In the beginning this means stopping thoughts from entering our mind completely. In the beginning this may seem a little daunting however there are various exercises which can help us to achieve this:

1. Firstly we need to purify the mind. We can do this by repeating a mantra many times. For example we could repeat the mantra AUM or Supreme. When chanting the mantra we should feel that the mantra embodies a meditative consciousness. As we repeatedly chant the mantra our thoughts cannot enter.

2. Identify with our soul. We should feel that what we are is not our mind. We should try to identify with our own soul. The soul is the inner, divine part of ourselves which is by nature pure and unencumbered by thoughts. We can say to ourselves ?I am the soul?. Feel that for our meditation exercises nothing else exists excepts our inner soul. Sri Chinmoy says:

?The moment you can say and feel, ?I am the soul,? and meditate on this truth, your soul?s infinite purity will enter into your heart. Then, from the heart, the infinite purity will enter into your mind.?
Purity in the mind means that thoughts will no longer bother you.

3. Asserting Control over the mind. When we meditate we should feel that it is we who have control over the mind and not the other way around.

4. Control of Breathing. To silence the mind we can focus all our attention on our breathing. Our breathing should be soft and gentle. The breathing should not be unnatural. The secret is to focus all our attention on our breathing and not anything else. As we breathe in we focus on this, as we breathe out again we become one with this sensation. By concentrating totally on our breathing we slow our mind down. With nothing else to think about our mind becomes one pointed and concentrated.

5. The inner flame. Visualisations can play an important role in meditation. Try to imagine a candle flame burning in your heart. This flame symbolises our inner aspiration, the yearning for something higher and deeper. The flame also symbolises light. You can feel this light is burning away the impurities of the mind.

6. Throw out thoughts. Each time a thought comes feel you can take hold of the thought and screw it up into a small object. Then this object can be thrown out of your mind. If you constantly reject thoughts you will notice two things. Firstly you become aware that thoughts are separate to our real identity. Secondly if thoughts are never allowed to grow they will stop coming altogether.

7. Value silence. We live such hectic lifestyles that silence often seems something unattainable. Complete inner silence may seem like exploring unchartered territory. However we should feel that silence embodies a very powerful consciousness which embodies peace and inner joy.

? In the early stage, do not meditate when you are too much depressed or mentally disturbed. In that case, if you do so, you will not be able to concentrate and consequently lose your faith on meditation.

? It is best to do it at the morning and at the night before you go to bed.

? Sit straight. Your spine should be upright. Relax for some time in your pose.

? Try to calm every part of your body starting from the tip of the legs and ending at the top of your head. Make your whole body still but relaxed.

? After that, try to watch over your mind. Let it go anywhere it wants. Do not hold your mind back. But carefully watch its path. After some time, you will be astonished to watch yourself thinking something that you would never imagine. But be calm always.

? Do not bother about the results. After a month or so, you will see that your streams of thoughts are becoming centralized. You are on the way to success then.

? Do not be disheartened if you fail. Try it again and again. You will surely succeed.

? Keep going, and you will feel such healthiness you could not ever imagine.

As you keep going with these procedures, you may sometimes peculiar. Sometimes you may sweat excessively, sometimes you may shiver. It seems to be implicit in all Suggestion Therapy that there is a forward
movement from "the self" to the image formed in the mind.

If you take the classic golf improvement exercise of visualizing yourself
executing the perfect swing, there is the implication that something is moving from the person to the image.

This forward movement could be something as simple as the belief that you can perform the swing, but I feel that it is much more than this. I believe that "the self" directs a flow of meaning-laden consciousness into the image to make that image real for that individual. Whatever meaning is conveyed in that projection of consciousness will determine the emotional experience for that person.

This projection, or assignment of meaning has become so automatic in our day-to-day dealings with the world that the meaning is now seen as part of the image itself instead of something assigned from within the mind.

Placing the meaning in the image itself appears to give the image the
power to be the cause of our emotional experiences, and by extension, outside agencies the power to at least influence our behaviour if not be the cause of
it.

The automatic assignment of meaning can also prove problematic when a therapist is trying to install new concepts in the mind to bring about
emotional and behavioural change.

A familiar situation will present itself and the customary meaning is assigned before the person has a chance to select their new definition of the situation. A few of these habitual assignments of meaning re-establishes the old thought pathways and usually results in a relapse into the familiar behaviour in that situation that the individual is trying to change.

I have found from my own work that attemts at behavioural and emotional change are much more likely to be successful when we "sever" this forward link of automatic assignment of meaning to the existing image before attempting to establish new images in the mind.

When the familiar concepts are "de-commissioned" by withdrawing the projection of meaning from them the individual experiences a significant reduction in their customary emotional response and the drive to perform their habitual actions.

This of course makes the establishment of new concepts in the mind to guide behaviour much more straightforward because the individual is not battling their familiar emotional responses and drives. New behaviours now have a much better chance of becoming the new habitual response.

My definition of "meditation" is a somewhat broad one. I consider it's an opportunity for each of us to realize our higher consciousness (or to realize our oneness with our higher consciousness) and to let go of resistance.

Benefits and Techniques of Meditation

There are many benefits to meditation, which I see as side effects or extras, rather than the primary purpose of meditation. However, many individuals are inspired to meditate because of the benefits or perceived benefits, such as improved health, greater calmness, less sleep at night. Regular meditators are generally more attentive, aware, and calm.

Given my broad definition, you can perhaps understand that I recognize the existence of hundreds of techniques and advocate a variety. Some are more supportive than others; some are more conducive to continuing a long term practice than others; some are easier to learn than others. A technique is a means to assist you in reaching the deeper purpose of meditating.

Guided Meditation: One Approach

One of the techniques I use with people is the "guided" meditation. A guided meditation is one in which a voice is used to guide the process. The voice can be your own or someone else's. Some folks feel more relaxed or more clear as a result of guidance and support of another's voice.

A soothing voice is more conducive to a meditative state than a harsh one. Simplicity is more helpful than complex words or complicated ideas. A slow pace, rather than a fast cadence, tends to foster greater depth. A regular practice is helpful for going deeper.

Enhancing Your Guided Meditations

Here are suggestions for the most effective guided meditations or guided visualizations, whether you wish to lead others verbally, or you wish to benefit the most from being guided by someone else, or you wish to guide yourself.

Align with the Divine. When we are in touch with our higher consciousness, words flow through us. Or perhaps they do not flow through us, in which case, silence is a perfect condition.

Establish Intention. A guided meditation that begins with a stated intention will find perfect rhythm and sound and depth, regardless of the spoken words. The best statements of intention are simple and broad, like "to relax" or "to align with the divine" or "to be more aware."

Be Present. New meditators are often concerned with "getting the words right." However, a satisfying guided meditation is deeper than words. Showing up fully will do more for lifting consciousness than a well-edited script.

Breathe. Breathe and instruct others to breathe to enhance grounding and relaxation. Some meditation teachers have rules about breathing. I keep in simple: breathe in and breathe out. And notice.

Be Conscious of Energy. You may see energy or feel it or sense it or know what is happening energetically. If you feel confusion, invite clarity to be present. If you sense resistance, give your attention to safety or ease or comfort or relaxation.

Honor Both Uniqueness and Universality. If you guide others into a meditative state, remember that individuals are unique beings with their own set of beliefs which are not to be undermined, but honored. The deeper we move into a meditative state, the more universal are the experiences, with space for each of us to have our own unique expression.

Let go of Expectations of End Results. Sometimes we get fixated on how we think things "should be" and miss living right now. A guided inner experience can provide power to open to new possibilities, if we just show up for the experience.

Feel and Express Gratitude. It's a joy to do inner work, which usually prompts us to greater and greater gratitude. Gratitude is a powerful consciousness from which to live and to express outwardly.

Live in the Consciousness of Loving Kindness. Sometimes when we are carrying on our daily lives, we forget the calmness of a meditation. It's important to train ourselves to live this calmness and joy.

Practice, Practice, Practice. It's important to practice until meditation is part of your life style. If one approach feels good one day and another another day, then you are trusting your own inner guidance if you shift from one technique to another.

The most important message here is to know ?why? are you choosing a particular form of meditation at that level of meditation? As an example, some people want to learn meditation to improve their concentration, while others want to gain the ability to quiet their mind?s chatter, and others want to gain inner peace and reduce their daily stress. Still others want to obtain self-knowledge and God-realization - which involves having a conscious contact of our soul with God. That?s the hidden ?Power of Meditation! Meditation is that ?connector? that will bring you enormous spiritual benefits - if you choose the right level of meditation to practice. That?s really the bottom-line.

The Four Levels of Meditation

By practicing higher and higher levels of meditation, the practitioner will accelerate their spiritual progress and consciousness. Another important point to make is that the higher the level of meditation - the greater the necessity of having a truly competent spiritual teacher to guide you to achieving your goal. Having a competent spiritual teacher means getting clear on what you want to achieve with meditation. The higher the level of meditation, the more spiritually conscious your teacher needs to be. That?s to bottom-line. The inner spiritual regions are extremely vast and illusive.
By following a less qualified spiritual teacher means you will not make it to your goal.

For example, if you spend hundreds of hours studying for what you believe is a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) and you thought your MBA teacher is truly qualified and competent enough to teach you at that level, but in reality, was only qualified to lead you to a High School Diploma, then think of the amount of time and energy that was wasted on you getting to your goal. Since the five physical senses are being stimulated, this level of meditation is void of ?stillness? and will not lead you to self-knowledge and God-realization. This level is strictly an ?outer? physical practice that involves the physical body, whereas to achieve self-knowledge and God-realization, the body needs to be left behind in a state of absolutely stillness and silence. Walking meditation is ?physical activity?. It includes breathing exercises and various kinds of yoga postures, chanting of hems, singing of praises, performing devotional rites and rituals, for example, Sufi whirling and spinning or the spinning of prayer wheels, etc. These are all animated practices or physical activities and really have nothing to do with ?absolute stillness?.

2. Level two is called ?Mindfulness? meditation. Mindfulness meditation begins the ?inner journey? by shifting our ?attention? or ?concentration? However, the nature of the mind is to analyze, criticize, judge, measure, and jump around back-and-forth from the past to the future. The mind pulls our attention away from getting ?silent? and into an endless dialogue that distracts our ?attention? more and more away from being absolutely motionless. Remember, the mind never sits still! It?s constantly restless. Therefore, those who believe the mind will lead them towards self-knowledge and God-realization are deeply mistaken. Since the mind?s tendency is to-never-be-still or to be in constant motion (by avoiding the deeper silences and stillness within), one can never use the mind to realize God. God-realization is another name for absolute stillness. ?Silence is Golden?!

3. Level three is called ?Jyoti? meditation. Jyoti means Light and this level of meditation begins another dramatic shift in ones spiritual evolution. This level involves having the practitioner?s achieve ?absolute silence and stillness? by focusing their ?attention? or ?concentration? into the inner radiant Light that they see. The practitioner focuses their attention into the center of the field of darkness they see in front of them when they close their eyes. This is our gazing point for Jyoti meditation. The gazing point is located between and behind the two eyebrows. It?s been called the ?Third-Eye? or ?Single-Eye? in many of the scriptures.

Jyoti meditation involves using a Mantra or a ?five-word-phrase? to control the chattering nature of the mind. The Mantra helps block the mind?s chatter and narrowly focuses the ?attention? or ?awareness? into the center of the field of vision that we see in front of us when our eyes are closed. The Mantra holds our ?attention? at the third-eye center and when the attention is steady, riveted, and fixed there, the inner doorway opens and we begin to see glimpses of inner radiant Light. We also begin to hear Sound.

The practitioner sees many colored Lights (Jyoti) ? white light, yellow, red, orange, green, blue, indigo, purple, and golden Light. This Light emanates from those non-physical spiritual regions far beyond the physical body. This is the threshold of where the soul travels to after the death of the physical body. In addition, one may hear Celestial Sounds or Music. This Music is referred to by different names and is called the ?Shabd? ?Naam? or ?Word? ?Logos? or ?Tae? in different scriptures. These celestial melodies are ceaselessly playing and sustain everything in creation. All of this remains hidden from us without knowing how to meditate and leave the physical body.

4. The fourth level of meditation is called ?Dhyan? or ?Samati? (which means: In Deep Contemplation). Dhyan and Jyoti meditation complement each other by helping the practitioner enter a state of absolute silence and stillness. During that state, the practitioner enters the radiant inner Light and hears Sounds or melodies. The practitioner is so fully absorbed into their inner spiritual experience that we say they have entered ?Samati?. While in Samati, the practitioner enters more and more subtle spiritual regions of consciousness. This is also called having an ?Outer-Body-Experience? or OBE. This experience is referred to as: ?Rising above Body Consciousness? or ?Dying While Living?. In this super-conscious state, the practitioner experiences their own soul and begins to travel on the radiant inner Light through the higher spiritual regions until they reach God true essence.

Since the radiant Light and Sound originally emanated from God, the practitioner simply rides upon the Light and Sound until they reach God?s true abode. These lofty spiritual regions are locations in consciousness and having a living spiritual teacher who can guide us there is essential. These inner spiritual regions are incomprehensibly vast and only a competent spiritual teacher who traverses these regions thousands of times a day is competent enough to guide us there. This level of Spiritual teach is called a ?Sant? and we?ll discuss them in our next Article.
